PSLE #73 English Oral – A Family Day Out at the Esplanade
Pslenotes Episode #73 - Oreo Method
Reading Passage:
151 words
The sun gleamed off the silver, thorn-like spikes of the Esplanade as our family strolled along the bustling waterfront. Known affectionately as the “Durian” by locals, this iconic landmark was the highlight of our weekend outing. My younger brother skipped ahead, his eyes wide with excitement as he pointed toward the towering skyscrapers of the city skyline.
We were there to attend a free outdoor concert under the canopy of the amphitheatre. As the musicians began to play, a blend of traditional and modern melodies filled the air, drawing a diverse crowd of onlookers. It was heartening to see people from all walks of life sitting together, tapping their feet to the rhythmic beats. My grandmother smiled warmly, remarking that such performances were a beautiful way to keep our cultural heritage alive. As the sky turned a brilliant shade of orange, I realized that these simple moments of togetherness were what truly mattered most.
PSLE Oral Practice: Stimulus-Based Conversation (Oreo Method)
Question 1:
Q: Would you be interested in attending a performance at the Esplanade? Why?
O (Opinion): I would definitely love to attend a performance at the Esplanade, especially an outdoor concert.
R (Reason): This is because the atmosphere is very lively and it allows me to enjoy music while taking in the beautiful view of the Singapore River.
E (Example): For instance, last year my school choir performed there. I remember feeling very inspired by the professional stage and the large, supportive crowd. It made the music feel more powerful than just listening to it on my phone.
O (Opinion): Therefore, I think visiting the Esplanade is a fantastic way to experience the arts firsthand.
Question 2:
Q: The Esplanade is a famous landmark in Singapore. Do you think unique buildings like this are important for a country?
O (Opinion): Yes, I believe that unique landmarks like the Esplanade are extremely important for any country.
R (Reason): These buildings give a nation a distinct identity and make it stand out on the world map, which can instill a sense of pride in its citizens.
E (Example): For example, when tourists see the “Durian” shape of the Esplanade, they immediately think of Singapore. It shows that our country is creative and values modern design alongside our traditional culture.
O (Opinion): Thus, I feel such landmarks are essential because they represent our growth and our unique personality as a nation.
Question 3:
Q: Some people say that children nowadays prefer staying at home on their devices rather than going out for cultural events. How can we change this?
O (Opinion): In my view, we can encourage more children to attend cultural events by making these experiences more interactive and “Instagrammable.”
R (Reason): If kids feel that an event is “hands-on” rather than just sitting still and watching, they are much more likely to put down their devices and participate.
E (Example): For instance, if the Esplanade held a “Digital Art” festival where we could use our tablets to interact with the performers or change the lights on stage, my friends and I would be very excited to go.
O (Opinion): So, I think by blending technology with traditional arts, we can make cultural outings more appealing to my generation.
